This CD is a compilation of information gathered by Peter Brusaschi, the owner of www.opalmine.com over a period of 35 years of wandering the Australian opal fields, dealing in rough opal, processing the stone into gems for the jewelry industry, designing and organizing the manufacture of such jewelry, promoting and merchandising opals and opal jewelry all over the world. Peter started his opal career in the outback town of Yowah in western Queensland. Boulder opal was his first challenge, the most difficult of all the varieties to complete. He learnt the triplet and doublet making procedures in Adelaide south Australia and got to know Coober Pedy, the opal capital of the world. Currently he focuses on Black opal from Lightning Ridge where he is part owner of a 3000 acre property in the middle of the opal fields. The opal mining industry is unique in itself. it is accomplished by many little family mines scattered throughout his property and all around Lighting Ridge. Because of his close proximity to the mines, he is able to locate parcels of opal that would otherwise not be seen because of the secretive nature of the industry and because often big dealers snatch the opal as soon as it becomes available, which nowadays is not often. Opal is running out but opportunities are still there for the little hobbyist to find a good parcel through Peter and often double his money between the rough parcels and the completed stone. The name of this CD tells it all. ' The ordinary Bloke's guide to opal' it speaks down to earth language. it defines little used terms. It tells you how to make opal cutting machinery on the cheap.
