You can get a pretty good idea of the size of these stones if you live in the USA because you have a dime coin in one of the pictures giving you the comparison. for the benefits of Australians, a dime coin (18mm) is a little bit bigger than our old cent coin, and a bit smaller than 5c (19mm) Please add your comments to the bottom of this blog page if you would like further clarification of coin sizes in your particular country so that you can understand the comparative sizes.
Incidentally, these boulder opals have been cleaved out of huge ironstone rocks, first by sledge hammers, then by careful slicing with diamond blades and grinders. Buying rough opal like this is a much easier and way of getting material to create your finished gems. Stones such as these are helped with the use of a dremmel tool as much of the ironstone inclusions you see here are removable if you take care. Check out the details in the ‘Buyer and Lapidary Hints and Tips’ on this opalmine site.
