Doublet opals are dark opals that have been set with a dark or black background that gives them a black opal appearance. Mostly they are the remains of opalized shells from the Coober Pedy region and the backing that is used is often boulder opal ironstone from Queensland. These stones look very much like boulder opals except that the back has been assembled by the opal cutter. This particular parcel is sold as a set for the price shown but if you want to select just one or two stones, they are priced at $60 each but as you can see, you can get the whole lot for $180.
