Boulder opals hold a fascination rarely seen in other gemstones. This one has a strip of precious opal in the middle surrounded by its ‘mother’ the natural boulder ironstone from which this type of opal jewelry gets its name.  This one comes dressed in a lovely black velvet gem box.  The price includes international registered mail to your door or post office box.

Opal Jewelry – Boulder Opal

Is found in the western and north western parts of Queensland, Australia. The opal fields stretch from Yowah and Koroit in the south to Opalton, north of Winton in the north towards the Northern Territory border. Opal jewelry of course is not set in these regions.  The opals are transported back to workshops, sometimes on the opal fields themselves but more often to opal cutters in the coastal areas such as Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Adelaide and Sydney.

Boulder opal jewelry can be presented as full colored stones without ironstone showing. When the stone is very dark or black in the background it is categorized as black opal. When it includes ironstone sometimes they are called ‘fun stones’  or ‘picture opal’
